Candle Safety Guide

Candle Safety Guide

  1. Store candles in a cool, dry place away from light to prevent fading.
  2. Always burn candles on a protected, noncombustible, heat-resistant surface securely placed on an appropriate holder. Other than jar candles, all candles may be susceptible to dripping or guttering. A dripless candle is a misnomer, and precautions should always be taken.
  3. Laying a fragranced or colored candle directly on furnishings can cause surface damage.
  4. Keep wax pool free of wick trimmings or other foreign matter that might present a fire hazard.
  5. Burning a candle in a draft will cause the flame to smoke. Over time this can affect home decor.
  6. Extinguish candles by blowing them out gently, so as not to splatter liquid wax, or use a snuffer. Do not use water! In the case of jars, do not replace the lid while burning.
  7. If an off-center flame is causing the candle to burn unevenly, simply move the extinguished wick to the center with a metal spoon handle while the wax is still soft.
  8. Candles burned close to one another will affect each other's burning quality due to their combined heat. Bear this in mind when creating decorative arrangements.
  9. Containers may become hot. Handle with care.

Information for Container Candles

  1. Handle with care, as container may become hot.
  2. Avoid glass-to-glass contact when removing or replacing lid. Do not use if cracked, chipped, or scratched and Do not refill with wax.
  3. Specific usage conditions affect burn times.
  4. Never allow the flame to come in direct contact with the side of the container. Keep wick trimmed to 1/4" and centered: reposition as needed by quickly moving wick back to center with a metal spoon handle. Avoid drafts or excessive vibrations. Caution: Extinguish the flame before trimming the wick.
  5. If the jar becomes blackened while burning, clean with a dry paper towel after the candle has been extinguished. Remember: keeping the wick trimmed to 1/4" while burning may prevent this blackening.
  6. Discontinue use when 1/2" of wax remains. This will prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface or container itself.
  7. Wax and water don't mix. If a candle is exposed to moisture, it may not re-light. Water that becomes overheated and trapped by wax can cause an explosive spattering of hot wax. Don't leave uncovered candles outdoors overnight.

Information for Votive Candles

  1. Caution: Remove the label on the bottom of the candle prior to using.
  2. Votive candles are designed to liquefy while burning and must be used in an appropriate sized container. The inside of the container should be of similar size to the votive candle. Too wide of a container will leave the liquid wax too far from the flame and excess wax will remain. If burned free-standing, votives will drip.
  3. Add 1/8" of water to container to lessen breakage and make container easier to clean.
  4. Always remove metal tabs or clips from the bottom of the container before adding another candle.
  5. Keep the wick centered for even consumption of the wax. This will also prevent possible heat damage to the container.
  6. Keep the wax pool free of foreign matter that might cause a fire hazard.
  7. If the flame seems too small and is "drowning" in the wax, extinguish it and use a potholder to pick up the votive glass to pour the excess liquid into a lined wastebasket.

Information for Pillar Candles

  1. Always burn pillars placed on an appropriate holder, and also on a protected, non-combustible, heat-resistant surface.
  2. Cold extinguished wicks are very brittle and can break off at the wax surface leaving nothing to re-light.
  3. A grouping of burning pillars creates a stunning effect, especially when displayed in a fireplace or on the mantlepiece.

Information for Taper Candles

  1. Be certain your candles are set firmly and upright in their holders.
  2. In relighting a partially burned candle, never straighten the wick. It should be curved to burn properly.
  3. Drafts, excessive vibrations or nearby heat sources may encourage dripping and should be avoided.
  4. Candles may drip when burned in candle lamps due to the degree of heat that can develop inside the glass globe, and due to the inflow and outflow of air through the globe top. To provide ventilation at the base, slightly raise the globe from its base (a penny works fine) to allow cool air to enter from the bottom and the hotter air to escape through the top.
  5. Wooden taper holders should include a metal socket to prevent the holder from igniting.

Caution:

Failure to follow instructions could result in injury or property damage.
