Take the 9”x2 ½” rectangle and cut crosswise to create two rectangles 2 ½” x 4 ½” (C).
Take the 4” square and sub-cut lengthwise and crosswise to get four 2” squares (D).
Striped and Red Drop Fabrics
Sub-cut each 2 1/4”x 27” strip into twelve 2 ¼” squares (E and F).

General Sewing Instructions:

This pattern uses a scant ¼” seam allowance.  Sew fabrics with right sides together and raw edges even.

Sewing Instructions:

Top and Bottom Rows

Make Your Pinwheels:

To make the 6 pinwheels, take your 2 ¼” squares of striped fabric (E) and draw a diagonal line on the back of them from corner to corner. With right sides together, pair them with the 2 ¼” squares of red drop fabric (F).  Sew ¼” on both sides of the drawn diagonal line (see Figure 1). Cut along the drawn line, making two triangles (Figure 2). Open triangles and press seams toward the red drop fabric. Take a ruler with a 45-degree line and match that line up with the sewing line, now trim this piece to a 1 ½” square (we gave you extra fabric so you could trim for accuracy).  The more accurately the seam lines up with the 45-degree line, the more precise your pinwheels will turn out. Repeat this for all 24 half square triangles.

Next, pair two of the 1 ½” squares, matching raw edges and rights sides together.  Make sure your fabric placement is such that the red drop and stripes are alternating.  Sew and repeat for all your pairs of squares. Each pair should measure 1 ½ X 2 ½”. Trim if necessary.

Take two of these pieces and sew together with raw edges matching and right sides together. Again, make sure your fabric placement is such that the red drops and stripes are alternating. Repeat this until you have 6 completed pinwheels.  Each completed pinwheel should be a 2 ½” square. Trim if necessary.

Assembling the Top and Bottom Rows:
Take a white 1 ½”x2 ½” rectangle (B) and match right sides together with a pinwheel. Pin along the right side of the pinwheel. Sew and press seams toward the white fabric. These pieces should measure 3 ½”X 2 ½”. Repeat for another set. With right sides together, sew these two pieces together so that you have a pinwheel and white rectangle alternating. Press seam toward white rectangle. This piece should now measure 2 ½” x 6 ½”. Sew your final pinwheel to the right side of the remaining rectangle. Again, press seam toward the white rectangle. This row should now measure 2 ½” X 8 ½”.  Repeat this whole process to create another row exactly like this one.

Middle Row
Take all four white 2” squares (D) and mark a diagonal line on the back of the square from corner to corner in pencil. This will be your sewing line. With right sides together, place the white (D) square on all four corners of the center sailboat square (A).  The diagonal lines should be angled so that you create a hexagon. Stitch right on top of the diagonal line. Trim seam and press seam toward the white fabric.  Repeat so that all four corners have been sewn and your final piece measures 4 ½” square.

With right sides together, pair the final center square with the white 2 ½”x4 ½” rectangle piece (C), matching raw edges to the left side of the center square (A). Sew then press seam toward the white rectangle.  Repeat this process by matching raw edges of white 2 ½”x4 ½” rectangle piece (C) to the right side of the center square. Again, sew and press seam allowance toward white rectangle. The middle row should measure 4 ½” X 8 ½”. Trim if needed.

Sewing the Rows Together
With right sides together and raw edges even, sew a pinwheel row to the top of the middle row. Press seams toward the middle row. Repeat by sewing the final pinwheel row to the bottom of the center row. Press seams toward the middle row. Your block should measure 8 ½”x8 ½”. Trim if needed.
